Un bar est le séjour parfait pour les âmes fatiguées des luttes de la vie et le décor idéal d'un roman noir, mais, au lieu de l'utiliser comme un simple accessoire, Cornelius Lehane dans son premier roman en fait le lieu unique d'une véritable tragédie. D'ailleurs son héros, Brian le barman, est un acteur au chômage, fils de la classe ouvrière qui entreprit autrefois des études de droit pour défendre les opprimés. Et ceux-ci ne manquent pas parmi les habitués de Chez Oscar, ce bar minable de Broadway, refuge des noctambules les plus attardés entre lesquels règne une sorte de fraternité. C'est pourtant parmi eux que Brian va chercher le coupable du meurtre d'Angelina, une ravissante brune qui a tourné la tête à tous les piliers du bar et leur a sans façon à presque tous accordé ses faveurs. Sans l'aide de la police dont son père, communiste, lui a inculqué une méfiance atavique, mais secondé par la sœur de la victime, Janet, qui est avocate, Brian va démontrer qu'il avait bien raison de préférer à la compagnie des bons citoyens celle des pochetrons au grand cœur dont il donne un portrait très attachant.
